Patriots’ Super Bowl comeback win, as told by social media

Super Bowl 51 was a game for the ages. Having covered the game from so many angles, we’re going to mix things up a bit and look at it from the standpoint of social media. With that, I present to you Patriots vs. Falcons as told by social media.
Pregame: Ray Lewis gives a pump-up speech to a garage
Lotta things going on in this video. Soon-to-be Hall of Fame linebacker giving a pregame speech for a hated AFC rival, inside a garage, using his inside voice.
So. Many. Chills.
Twitter had some fun with this, mocking the controversial linebacker and the NFL’s efforts to hype him up as one of the faces of the league:
The Super Bowl gets presidential
President Donald Trump picked the Patriots to beat the Falcons. One-for-one in his current tenure, congrats Donald!
Trump’s historic streak of picking games is over, but the current president might just be the most talented sports better in the history of U.S. Presidents:
Yeah it’s an old tweet, but things like this resurface all the time, especially during big games.
InfoWars delivers a huge scoop
InfoWars’ Alex Jones tweeted out “Lady Gaga To Conduct Satanic Ritual At Super Bowel LI” before the tweet was eventually deleted. (Spoiler: there will be a call-back to this tweet, as Jones may have potentially been the guy to figure out how Tom Bradyand company would make the most improbable Super Bowl comeback of all time.)
Luke Bryan sings the national anthem
This video deservedly got a bump when the country singer performed his rendition of the national anthem. Some loved it, some hated it, and some couldn’t help but tweet about J.J. Watt and the troops:
The Super Bowl commences
Maybe Matt Ryan just had a premonition.
Falcons jump out to early 7-0 lead
Saw that one coming a million miles away.
Falcons score again, extending that lead to 14-0
Stats nerds loved this, as it set up what would become a historic game.
Ah, the notorious “on to Cincinnati” game. As a Bengals fan, that moment still haunts me.
This stat is perhaps the most mind-boggling number in Super Bowl history. Teams prior to last night’s Patriots team had really never been capable of making a sizable comeback.
Political jokes! In all seriousness, this ended up as a really accurate tweet.
Julio Jones makes an unbelievable catch
This wasn’t even his best catch of the game.
A Brady pick-six turns into a 21-0 Falcons lead
Big Cat Country comin’ in HOT.
Put it on a poster!
Lady Gaga knocks the halftime show out of the park
Shoutout to Spongebob, the real OG.
Throwing a “Tweet of the Night” on that last one. Make sure to check out SB Nation’s halftime show coverage if you haven’t done so already!
Twitter doesn’t forget to stay woke after Gaga’s halftime performance
Remember that InfoWars callback? Here it is:
There’s the first callback.
We’re getting woker ...
There it is! #StayWoke of the night goes to Stephen with a solid topical tweet.
Stranger Things Season 2 trailer drops, omg
Donald Trump left the game early, and threw the worst party of all time
And this party, well ...
Julio Jones does Julio Jones things (again)
Whoops, no idea how that last tweet got in there ...
Julian Edelman’s catch breaks the internet
Saints have no chill
Patriots crush the Falcons’ dreams in OT
Shots fired at the Commish!
Topical.
Ooooh, that’s cold.
It was a game for the ages, and the excitement level was at an all-time Super Bowl high. We’ve already documented the frustration many Falcons fans have gone through, but this sequence of tweets from our own Jeanna Thomas really just goes to show how heartbreaking a loss this was for Atlanta fans:
Get well soon, Falcons fans. At least you’re not Skip Bayless:
